The International Food, Wine and Travel Writers Association (IFWTWA) Awards Committee is pleased to announce the winner of its 2013 Food, Wine and Travel Writing Scholarship Award in Professional Journalism. This year, Barbara Ramsay Orr of Burlington, Ontario, earned the award for her story “Haven’t You Always Wanted to Visit a Butter Museum?” originally published in The Globe and Mail.

According to Allen Cox, IFWTWA Awards Committee Chair, “Ms. Orr is an accomplished journalist who, in her story, takes readers on a romp through both the well-traveled and the lesser-discovered sides of Cork, Ireland.” Orr’s journey was inspired by her quest to learn about and taste Ireland’s famed buttered egg, which originated in Cork. The story is fresh, entertaining and informative with a firm nod to Cork’s culinary scene as well as its history.

“In all my years of travel,” says Orr, “I have come to realize one important truth: the best way to get to know a country is through its cuisine. That’s how I learn its history, its character and its passions. I take my readers on a culinary journey that becomes a cultural one, sometimes even an adventurous one.”

Orr was awarded a one-year regular membership in IFWTWA; publication in Global Writes, IFWTWA’s online magazine; a cash prize and a Scholarship Award Certificate. Read Ms. Orr’s winning entry at The Globe and Mail.

“We receive many outstanding entries in each year’s competition,” says Cox. “Ms. Orr’s winning entry exemplifies the journalistic excellence IFWTWA looks for in its members. I am thrilled to welcome her as a member of IFWTWA.”
